One-liner: A habit tracker with no checkboxes. Each day is a small square. As you log habits, the square fills with a hand-drawn ink pattern, and a year of squares adds up to a poster. The look is taken from “Square box abstract artwork” by P Nanak, which pairs black ink patterns with a lemon-yellow accent.
Origin: New idea, came from the user directly. The visual reference is a Pinterest pin of that artwork.
Design decisions so far:
The poster is the main view. One square per day, laid out like a page (19 columns, so a year is about 20 rows).
Habits change over time. Expect 5–10 at once, added and dropped across the year.
Partial credit counts. 140g of a 150g protein goal is 93%, and the square’s ink density follows how much of the day’s goals you hit.
Visual rules:
Every habit has its own motif: hatching, dots, arches, squiggles, rings…
A perfect day is filled with the accent colour.
A rest day is solid ink.
A strong run (7+ days at 80% or more) gets a big circle drawn across several squares, like the circles in the artwork.
Ruled out: the Ledger (one row per habit per month) and the Quilt (each day split into a cell per habit). They’re easier to read, but they lose what makes the art look good.
Prototypes (open in a browser, fake 2026 data):
poster.html is the playground. Tap a square to edit that day: number habits have sliders, yes/no habits have buttons, and the square redraws live. The Style panel switches palette (Lemon, Court, Riso, Blueprint, Night, Clay), tile style (Signature, Strips, Layers), grid weight, milestone circles and hand wobble. Edits are saved in localStorage.
mock.html is the first pass, comparing the Ledger, Quilt and Poster layouts side by side.
Open questions:
What are the actual goals? Which habits, what targets, and how many at once. This is the big one, and the user is thinking it over.
Palette and tile style: Lemon with Signature looks most like the reference. Court with Strips is also possible.
In Signature, the motif changes as you tick off habits. Is that rewarding or confusing? The other option is a fixed rule, e.g. the motif always comes from your hardest-won habit.
Is a printable year poster a real goal, or just a bonus?
Platform: an iPhone PWA (like Pocket Sudoku) or native.
Status: Raw. The visual concept has been prototyped and it works. The next step is to define the goals, then pick a style.
